Especially when using a new Android device, after Software updates or the installation of a new app, it's possible that you recognize new symbols or signs in the notification bar from which you don't know the meaning, yet. The following list will give you an overwview of some of these icons and their meanings, as well as what app generates them (if they're created by an app).

The icons visible in this list can differ depending of the manufacturer and device, as well as the installed ROM; however, in general they should, at least, look similar to each other or are completely the same.

symbol Meaning/Definition

Visualizes that the device volume is set to "vibrate only".[1]

The device is set to silent mode and will not emit any notification sounds.
The mobile data is enabled and the device is currently in the GPRS network.[2]

The mobile data is enabled and the device is currently in the LTE/4G network. 4G and LTE are used as synonyms, it depends on the devices branding, what is shown.
This symbol indicates, that the device is currently connected to a mobile network and visualizes the strength of the signal (relative as bars).

The device currently is not connected to a mobile network, e.g. because the network operator does not have coverage in this area or the SIM card is deactivated.[3]
The device is connected to another mobile network, but not to the one of your operator, and uses Roamind.[4]

There's no SIM card attached to the device or the device could not recognize the SIM card correctly.

The feature Download Booster is enabled.
The WiFi is activated and connected to a WiFi network.
The symbol indicates, that WiFi calling is enabled[5]
The WiFi connection is interrupted. That can have different reasons::
  • because of a bad WiFi strength you do not get an IP address assigned or the DHCP server is misconfigured
  • The DNS server can not resolve domain names or is not reachable
  • "no internet": Google's server are not reachable

NFC on the device is enabled.
Bluetooth is enabled.

There's an update available for the device software.[6]

USB-Debugging is enabled and the device connected to a computer at the moment.[7]
At least one alarm is configured, actvated and will be triggered at the configured time.
The symbol shows the charge state of the battery. Additionaly, the device is charged at the moment.

A screenshot from the display was created successfully. Tapping the line in the notification area will open the image in the default image viewer.
Same as above, however, the exclamation mark signals, that the image could not be saved, e.g. because of missing storage on the device or the app may block taking screenshots from it (e.g. banking apps).
(only devices from Samsung with a S-Pen) Notification, that the S-Pen was removed from the holder.
Private mode is enabled (files, which were moved to private are visible now).

Mode Do not disturb (dnd) is enabled.
The device mode is enabled.
There're more new/unread notifications as the system is able to show in the notification bar. The addiotional notifications can be viewed by swiping down the notification bar to open the notification area.[8]
(only Smasung devices) The feature Samsung SmartStay is enabled.[9]
The app for music recognition Shazam verweis= has added a notification to the notification bar (such as ads, charts, ...)
This symbol is created by the app Powerful Control verweis=.[10]
The feature Audioscrobbler is enabled in at least one app (last.fm verweis=, Spotify verweis= e.g.).[11]
Notifications are, e.g. in the settings or in the quick settings bar, disabled/blocked.[12]
App updates were installed automatically through the Google Play Store.
The internal storage of the device is full.[13]
The app avast Mobile Security & Antivirus verweis=  is doing something in the background (scanning files, e.g.).
Since Android 5000!5.0 verweis=Lollipop "Lollipop"  this symbol notifies, that there's an active root session.[14]
The symbol informs you, that the device, as well as the mobile network with which you're connected, supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE).
The sound playback (e.g. music) is supported by DolbyAudio (currently only the HTC One M9 as a replacement for BeatsAudio).
The app Tasker verweis= is active (which does not necessarily mean, that also profiles are activated, you can find that out by openeing the notification area by swiping down to the bottom from the notification bar).
The option hearing aid is enabled (Telephone app -> Settings -> Call settings -> Hearing aid)[15]
Android recognized a, that a (new or another) SD card was inserted into the device, which is currently prepared to be useable. The symbol will disappear automatically, once the card is embedded successfully and can be used.
The device currently is in the so called Lights Out Mode and dims, e.g., soft keys and the notifications in the notification bar.[16][17]
An app is currently requesting the current location, which is currently accquired by the device (using GPS or WiFi depending on the settings).

Rich Communication Suite (RCS) - Joyn[22]

On Samsung devices you can find the option Advanced Calling & Messaging in the settings following the path Connections -> additional Connection settings and enables/disables RCS, something like a successor for the SMS.
[23] [24] For all other devices you can look for an app called Joyn or Message+ which can be deactivated/uninstalled to get rid of this symbol.

Data Saver is enabled. To disable:

Reduces the data usage by optimizing visted pages on Google-servers.

App Pinterest verweis=
Message, that "the network may be monitored" by an unknown third-party, which is also visible when opening the quick settings bar. The most likely reason for this message is, that the user has installed a root CA certificate to the "User" trust store of trusted certificate authorities. Connections, which are using certificates from this CA, may be used for man-in-the-middle attacks.[25]
The device is connected to another device using WiFi Direct.[26]
Lenovo Smart Switch is active using the Custom profile.[27]
Indicates, that there're apps running in the background which may affect the battery lifetime.[28]
The automatic rotation of the screen is truned off. The device will stay in portrait mode, no matter what direction it is currently.[29]
Chromecast Screen Mirroring is active and some content is stremed to another screen right now.[30]
Indicates that a headphone is connected to the device.[31]
