List of symbols in the notification bar

Especially when using a new Android device, after Software updates or the installation of a new app, it's possible that you recognize new symbols or signs in the notification bar from which you don't know the meaning, yet. The following list will give you an overwview of some of these icons and their meanings, as well as what app generates them (if they're created by an app).

The icons visible in this list can differ depending of the manufacturer and device, as well as the installed ROM; however, in general they should, at least, look similar to each other or are completely the same.

HTC One vibrieren.pngAcer E700 vibrieren.jpg Samsung vibrieren.png

Visualizes that the device volume is set to "vibrate only".[1]

Lautlos Symbol Benachrichtigungszeile.pngLeiser 2.png

The device is set to silent mode and will not emit any notification sounds.
GPRS Symbol.png The mobile data is enabled and the device is currently in the GPRS network.[2]

Lte.png4G.jpg

The mobile data is enabled and the device is currently in the LTE/4G network. 4G and LTE are used as synonyms, it depends on the devices branding, what is shown.
Netz Symbol.png This symbol indicates, that the device is currently connected to a mobile network and visualizes the strength of the signal (relative as bars).

No network icon htc.pngNo network icon.png

The device currently is not connected to a mobile network, e.g. because the network operator does not have coverage in this area or the SIM card is deactivated.[3]
Aktives Roaming.png The device is connected to another mobile network, but not to the one of your operator, and uses Roamind.[4]

No sim icon htc.pngNo sim icon.png

There's no SIM card attached to the device or the device could not recognize the SIM card correctly.

The feature Download Booster is enabled.
WLAN Symbol.png The WiFi is activated and connected to a WiFi network.
Wifi calling.jpg The symbol indicates, that WiFi calling is enabled[5]
Symbol-Wifi-Problem.png The WiFi connection is interrupted. That can have different reasons::
  • because of a bad WiFi strength you do not get an IP address assigned or the DHCP server is misconfigured
  • The DNS server can not resolve domain names or is not reachable
  • "no internet": Google's server are not reachable

NFC Symbol.pngNFC-Symbol 2.png

NFC on the device is enabled.
Bluetooth Symbol.png Bluetooth is enabled.

Verfügbares Update Symbol.jpgUpdate symbol M9.png

There's an update available for the device software.[6]

USB-Debugging aktiviert.jpgUSB Debugging M9.png

USB-Debugging is enabled and the device connected to a computer at the moment.[7]
Wecker Symbol.png At least one alarm is configured, actvated and will be triggered at the configured time.
Akku Symbol laedt.png The symbol shows the charge state of the battery. Additionaly, the device is charged at the moment.

A screenshot from the display was created successfully. Tapping the line in the notification area will open the image in the default image viewer.
M-G2LTE-SC Kein-screenshot-icon.png Same as above, however, the exclamation mark signals, that the image could not be saved, e.g. because of missing storage on the device or the app may block taking screenshots from it (e.g. banking apps).
Spen entfernt.png (only devices from Samsung with a S-Pen) Notification, that the S-Pen was removed from the holder.
Privater modus.png Private mode is enabled (files, which were moved to private are visible now).

Mode Do not disturb (dnd) is enabled.
HTC Fahrzeugmodus Symbol.png The device mode is enabled.
Weitere Benachrichtigungen.png There're more new/unread notifications as the system is able to show in the notification bar. The addiotional notifications can be viewed by swiping down the notification bar to open the notification area.[8]
Samsung Smartstay Symbol.png (only Smasung devices) The feature Samsung SmartStay is enabled.[9]
Shazam Symbol.png The app for music recognition Shazam verweis= has added a notification to the notification bar (such as ads, charts, ...)
PowerfulControl Symbol.jpg This symbol is created by the app Powerful Control verweis=.[10]
AudioScrobbler Symbol.jpg The feature Audioscrobbler is enabled in at least one app (last.fm verweis=, Spotify verweis= e.g.).[11]
Benachrichtigungen deaktiviert.png Notifications are, e.g. in the settings or in the quick settings bar, disabled/blocked.[12]
PlayStore Aktualisierungen Symbol.png App updates were installed automatically through the Google Play Store.
Symbol Speicher voll.png The internal storage of the device is full.[13]
Avast aktion benachrichtigungszeile.png The app avast Mobile Security & Antivirus verweis=  is doing something in the background (scanning files, e.g.).
Hash.png Since Android 5000!5.0 verweis=Lollipop "Lollipop"  this symbol notifies, that there's an active root session.[14]
VoLTE Samsung.jpgVoLTE Samsung 2.jpg The symbol informs you, that the device, as well as the mobile network with which you're connected, supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE).
DolbyAudio Symbol.png The sound playback (e.g. music) is supported by DolbyAudio (currently only the HTC One M9 as a replacement for BeatsAudio).
Tasker.png The app Tasker verweis= is active (which does not necessarily mean, that also profiles are activated, you can find that out by openeing the notification area by swiping down to the bottom from the notification bar).
Hoerhilfe Symbol.jpg The option hearing aid is enabled (Telephone app -> Settings -> Call settings -> Hearing aid)[15]
Sd card inserted icon htc.png Android recognized a, that a (new or another) SD card was inserted into the device, which is currently prepared to be useable. The symbol will disappear automatically, once the card is embedded successfully and can be used.
Lights out mode icon.png The device currently is in the so called Lights Out Mode and dims, e.g., soft keys and the notifications in the notification bar.[16][17]
Location Symbol.png An app is currently requesting the current location, which is currently accquired by the device (using GPS or WiFi depending on the settings).
Kaspersky Icon Benachrichtigungszeile.jpg Kaspersky Antivirus & Security verweis=[18]
Norton Antivirus Symbolleiste.jpg Norton Antivirus & Sicherheit verweis=[19]
Xperia Theme App Symbolleiste.jpg Sony Xperia Themes App[20]

Samsung erweiterte Anrufe Nachrichten Symbol.jpeg Rich Communication Suite (RCS) - Joyn[22]

On Samsung devices you can find the option Advanced Calling & Messaging in the settings following the path Connections -> additional Connection settings and enables/disables RCS, something like a successor for the SMS.
[23] [24] For all other devices you can look for an app called Joyn or Message+ which can be deactivated/uninstalled to get rid of this symbol.

Data-saver.pngHuwei Data Saver Icon.jpg Data Saver is enabled. To disable:

Settings - data usage - Data Saver
Reduces the data usage by optimizing visted pages on Google-servers.

Symbol-pinterest.PNG App Pinterest verweis=
Network may be monitored.jpg Message, that "the network may be monitored" by an unknown third-party, which is also visible when opening the quick settings bar. The most likely reason for this message is, that the user has installed a root CA certificate to the "User" trust store of trusted certificate authorities. Connections, which are using certificates from this CA, may be used for man-in-the-middle attacks.[25]
WiFi direct connected.png The device is connected to another device using WiFi Direct.[26]
Lenovo Smart Switch icon.jpg Lenovo Smart Switch is active using the Custom profile.[27]
Hintergrundapps icon.jpg Indicates, that there're apps running in the background which may affect the battery lifetime.[28]
Hochformat gesperrt Symbol.jpg The automatic rotation of the screen is truned off. The device will stay in portrait mode, no matter what direction it is currently.[29]
Cast icon.png Chromecast Screen Mirroring is active and some content is stremed to another screen right now.[30]
Headphones icon.jpg Indicates that a headphone is connected to the device.[31]
